God Gave Us Love is a sweet children's board book by Lisa Tawn Bergren. I did not realize that this little book is actually in a series of "God Gave Us" books by Bergren. I have not seen or read the others but enjoyed this one. In God Gave Us Love the Grampa Cub is explaining to Little Cub God's great love for us. He helps Little Cub think through why we are called to love others, even "pesky otters" when we don't feel like it. The book is a great discussion between generations of love of various relationships such as grandparent/grandchild, mothers/fathers, brothers/sisters, and then ultimately the love of God for us.

These are questions I have seen come up even from Munchkins who is only 3.5 years old. While the book does an excellent job of approaching deep theology for the younger age set it is really quite long. The format I received is a board book, recommended for ages 0 to 3 (according to the back of the book). Most of the board books we have or have read tend to have limited text per page. While God Gave Us Love's content message is important and wonderful to begin addressing at a tender age I find it rather unlikely many 0 to 3 year olds will be able to sit or comprehend its message. The books is also available in a hardcover format and for a child ages 4 or older, I can see this being a wonderful gift.

My favorite part of God Gave Us Love are the beautiful illustrations by Laura J. Bryant. Every page is colorful, playful, and the detail is lovely. Even if the content may be long or tedious for the younger age set, the pictures are sure to delight. Overall, I would recommend this book to parents who are seeking to train up their children as we are called to do in the Bible.

Note: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
