Hello, I'm an avoider. I avoid feelings, any kind of feelings. Sigh...... I have to change this for the sake of my kids. Milan and Kay Yerkovich really know what they are talking about. I can't tell you how many times I thought they were talking directly to me in How We Love Our Kids. They hit the nail on the head several times. I can see how my avoiding feelings has already been affecting Apple and Speedy. God has already been talking to me in this area in the last few years and this resource just affirmed it. I don't want my children to grow up to be avoiders too so I will be adjusting my behavior and embracing my feelings more and considering their feelings much more.

Even if you aren't an "avoider" I encourage you to read this book. You may be a victim, a pleaser, a controller, or a vacillator. Maybe you are none of those. Maybe you are just right but the sections that follow those 5 parenting styles cover styles of children and resources for growing closer to your kids. Every parent needs those. Even if your "child" is a teenager, this resource will be invaluable for you. From a Biblical standpoint, the Yerkovichs give us guidance on improving our relationships with our children. This isn't a 10 step program, it's not a miracle solution, it's real people information. Things that we all struggle with are laid out simply and presented with solutions to try.

This is an impressive book (*and I read LOTS of books so I'm not often impressed). It is one that I recommend to all parents! I did disagree with a few of their statements but for the most part I can see where they are coming from. This isn't a book that will beat you up either. It is simply here to help you improve. And we can all use a little improvement! As stated in the book "Your kids will benefit and so will you."

I received a copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own.
