Fiction - Amish & Mennonite
A Season for Tending, by Cindy Woodsmall, is a sensational novel. The first in the Amish Vines and Orchards series, it tells the story of Rhoda Byler, a woman with a gift for growing her garden and canning business. Rhoda, however, feels burdened by her other gift, knowing certain things are going to happen before they occur.
Samuel King, struggling to turn a profit from the apple orchard that has been in his family for generations, meets Rhoda when his wayward sister ends up stranded in Rhoda’s garden. Thinking Rhoda might be able to help his family get through an especially difficult season, he approaches her with a business deal. It seems to take most of his family as well as hers, along with a series of unfortunate events, to convince her to even try. But with his girlfriend’s jealousy and his brother’s attraction to Rhoda, as well as a terrible storm, he finds himself unsure of the future.
I enjoyed this book very much. I wasn’t quite prepared for the cliffhanger ending, but am looking forward to the second installment to find out what happens to these characters and their families. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction.
