Book Review: Praying for Your Future Husband

I am married. It would seem that this book is not for me. But I'll admit that Robin Jones Gunn is my all-time favorite author, and I came of age with the Christy Miller series, in which Christy Miller prays often for her future husband. Both Mrs. Gunn and Christy shaped much of how I thought about my future husband before I met mine. And since I'm raising two little girls, I was ecstatic when I found out that she wrote an entire book devoted to this subject.

Praying for Your Future Husband is not about indulging a girl's fantasy about boys. It is an authentic, realistic encouraging book about prayer. The subtitle of this book is Preparing Your Heart for His. That alone takes the focus off the specific guy and puts it on the condition of the girl. Yes, it is full of prayers to pray about The One, but it is equally full of prayers asking God to fully shape a girl into the woman that God wants her to be, with or without a husband. It is written from two very different experiences: Robin Jones Gunn, who lived "right" and her co-author Tricia Goyer, who lived a much rockier life that included becoming a teen mom. Every chapter includes true stories, prayers, Bible verses and practical applications.

My little girls are still under the age of three, but I am going to use this book as I pray for their future husbands. It is a fantastic guide and I think anyone who follows it won't be able to help growing closer to God in the process. Some day, when my girls start to feel anxious about their future mates (and most girls do), I hope that they'll read this book and find encouragement and a game plan to help them as they wait for God's timing.

If you are single and need encouragement, read this book. It can open a line of communication with God that quite possibly will give your heart some comfort as you wait for your turn.
