Religion - Christian Life
John Piper is the pastor for preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the author of more than forty books, including Future Grace, A Godward Life, The Dangerous Duty of Delight, Donít Waste Your Life, and Pleasures of God. Some of his books, including Desiring God, Hunger for God, Donít Waste Your Life and When I Donít Desire God, can be found free among thousands of articles and sermons at desiringgod.org
Of all the things John Piper may be known for, I think he is mostly noted for his saying
ďGod is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.Ē
This was the passion behind his message some 25 years ago. Desiring God is based upon the understanding of Christian Hedonism, which Piper is attributed for coining the term. Hedonism is simply a philosophy in which people seek pleasure rather than pain because pleasure is intrinsically good. Some have argued that Christian Hedonism started back with Jonathan Edwards while others argue that itís a faulty and misleading term to begin with since it suggests that our goal is in pleasures from God rather than merely in God alone. I personally think that he could have stayed away from the term so not to confuse or push people away from the message. This was obviously a similar thought and one recognized by John as he wrote in Forgive the Label, But Donít Miss the Truth
Desiring God on DVD is, in my opinion, a way to put something out on the market because it is its 25 year anniversary. The DVD consist of 10 messages, recorded from a seminar he teaches at his church on the subject. Each message is approximately 25-30 minutes. The study guide that goes with the DVD is the better part of the product. It is designed for both personal and group study. An individual has 5 days of bible study and ďhomeworkĒ of going further by reading articles or listening to other message all found on desiringgod.org. Then a group comes together to watch the DVD and answers the follow up questions. By the time you get to the DVD, one is well prepared to follow along his lecture and thought process.
Although I gained insight and understanding from most of the lectures, I certainly enjoyed, or found pleasure in, the personal study guide part more. Certainly the DVD and study guide is based upon 25 years of experience and deep thinking into the subject. However, Iím not convinced I would tell someone to get the newer DVD over the older, original book. I will confess at times though that I grew tired of hearing John Piper speaking. Obviously it is his passion and his writings, but with 25 years, I wondered whether there was any other people carrying the same torch. I suppose the same is true though when it comes to any other bible study or speaking series just as it would be for Beth Moore, Joyce Meyer, Rob Bell or Max Lucado.
In the end, I do think John has brought a lot of light to this truth of finding enjoyment and reasons to praise God. No one can deny his impact in this area. No one can deny his passion and his focus to see this accomplished in all he does. I do think itís a message that everyone should hear.
